# Fundraising Strategies

A practical guide for building real, lasting support for your chapter.

{% hint style="info" %} <mark style="color:$primary;">Quick confession: most chapter presidents discover “fundraising” the hard way - three weeks before an event, scrambling through cold emails, promising a logo on a banner to whoever replies first. It works, sort of. It also means starting from zero again next semester. This guide is about building something that doesn't reset every six months.</mark>
{% endhint %}

### Introduction

Fundraising is one of the biggest challenges for student-led organisations - chapters often depend on a handful of sponsors, raise funds reactively, or struggle to sustain activities year over year. This guide reframes fundraising as resource mobilisation: building an ecosystem of support, not chasing one-off transactions.

### 🧭 Here's What You'll Walk Away With

* A mindset shift: fundraising isn't just asking for money
* A model for diversifying your funding so one lost sponsor doesn't sink your semester
* A copy-paste formula for writing a fundraising pitch that actually lands
* A step-by-step sponsor playbook, from first outreach to long-term renewal
* Templates and a calendar rhythm to keep funding from becoming a once-a-year panic

### What Is “Fundraising Strategy” Really About?

It's the deliberate practice of building diversified, mission-aligned, long-term sources of support for your chapter - money, yes, but also expertise, credibility, volunteers, and in-kind resources. It applies anytime your chapter needs to fund an event, a project, or its general operations, and it works best when treated as an ongoing relationship-building activity, not a once-a-semester scramble.

### Why Does This Matter for oikos Specifically?

Because oikos chapters are built and rebuilt every year or two by new boards with no institutional memory of who funded what last time. Without a deliberate strategy, that turnover guarantees a “start from zero” cycle - and overdependence on one sponsor means your chapter's survival depends on one relationship outliving one board's term, which it usually doesn't.

Worse: weak, transactional fundraising (“can you sponsor our event?”) quietly trains your partners to see oikos as an ad-space vendor instead of a sustainability leadership pipeline worth genuinely investing in. That's the opposite of what we want them to believe.

If you only watch one video connected to this section, make it Dan Pallotta's TED Talk ["The way we think about charity is dead wrong"](https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_pallotta_the_way_we_think_about_charity_is_dead_wrong) - it'll change how you ask for support, even at chapter scale.
{% endhint %}

### How: From Mindset to Money in the Bank - The Funnel

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2965938342-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-McTWLVc9mrD4Wj9307R%2Fuploads%2Fl4BGBXlKLldrLyc0Itxo%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=5ee9ef51-8d2b-4ba3-9967-f5ea59e59c4a" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### Step 1 - Reframe: Fundraising ≠ Asking for Money

| ❌ Traditional Mindset        | ✅ Resource Mobilisation Mindset            |
| ---------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| “How do we get sponsorship?” | “How do we build an ecosystem of support?” |

Chapters can mobilise five types of capital, not just one:

* Financial Capital - donations, sponsorships, grants
* Social Capital - alumni, faculty, volunteers
* Knowledge Capital - experts, mentors, speakers
* Institutional Capital - university support, credibility
* In-Kind Support - venue, food, software, logistics

Example shift:

> ❌ “Can you sponsor our event?”

> ✅ “Can we collaborate to advance sustainability education among future leaders?”

Playbook principle: The strongest chapters build ecosystems, not transactions.

#### Step 2 - Check Your Readiness Before You Start Asking

Before any outreach, run through this checklist:

* Strategic Readiness - clear annual goals, defined impact priorities, event roadmap
* Financial Readiness - annual budget prepared, revenue targets set, expense estimate created
* Team Readiness - fundraising lead identified, partnership owner assigned, outreach responsibilities clear
* Communication Readiness - sponsor deck ready, chapter impact story available, social proof documented&#x20;

{% hint style="info" %}
(This is also your built-in mistake-prevention list - chapters that skip this tend to land in the “common mistakes” pile below: fundraising only when money runs out, generic outreach emails, no impact reporting, poor follow-up, misaligned sponsors, overdependence on one donor.)
{% endhint %}

#### Step 3 - Diversify: The oikos Funding Pyramid

Never rely on one funding source for more than 40% of chapter revenue. This single rule will save a future board from a very bad semester.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2965938342-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-McTWLVc9mrD4Wj9307R%2Fuploads%2FouZetOZYwxcPUHWXVFO4%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0c8abe83-3034-48b0-9e72-a9c5bc935946" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### Step 4 - Build a Fundraising Narrative People Actually Want to Fund

People rarely fund activities. They fund problems, solutions, outcomes, and impact.

**The Mission–Need–Impact Formula:**

**MISSION** (why does your chapter exist?) → **NEED** (why is support required now?) → **IMPACT** (what change will this create?)

Example pitch:

> “oikos empowers future leaders to integrate sustainability into business and society. Your support will help us deliver sustainability workshops and community initiatives impacting 300+ students this semester.”

{% hint style="info" icon="globe-pointer" %}
For the broader “why before what” principle behind this kind of pitch, Simon Sinek's [TED Talk on how great leaders inspire action](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qp0HIF3SfI4) is short, sharp, and worth the 18 minutes.
{% endhint %}

Quick gut-check before any ask leaves your inbox - does it answer:

* What's the problem? (e.g. “Students lack sustainability literacy.”)
* What's our solution? (e.g. “We create experiential sustainability learning.”)
* What's the outcome? (e.g. “500+ students engaged annually.”)
* What's the impact? (e.g. “Future leaders take more responsible decisions.”)

#### Step 5 - Know Your Channels

#### Step 6 - The Sponsor Partnership Playbook

A relationship lifecycle, not a one-shot ask:

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2965938342-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-McTWLVc9mrD4Wj9307R%2Fuploads%2F82x5c9RK9pixliFWjuNI%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=8f5ffad2-7fd4-4ab1-a2cc-90c08146e816" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

* Categorise your sponsor universe: Tier A (high-probability), Tier B (moderate fit), Tier C (exploratory)
* Research alignment before reaching out: Does the organisation care about sustainability? Recruit students? Run ESG initiatives? Support education?
* Build relationships before proposals - interact, connect, understand priorities first, pitch collaboration second.

Create clear sponsorship tiers, e.g.:

| **Tier**          | **Contribution** | **Benefits**                   |
| ----------------- | ---------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Supporter         | €250             | Logo visibility                |
| Impact Partner    | €750             | Event branding                 |
| Strategic Partner | €1,500+          | Speaking slots + collaboration |

Stewardship is not optional. Within 1 week of securing support: thank-you message, impact summary, photos/videos, recognition post. This is what drives renewals - and renewals are far cheaper than finding new sponsors every semester.

#### Step 7 - Use the Psychology of Giving (Ethically)

People give when they feel:

* Connection - stories outperform statistics
* Trust - transparency drives confidence
* Tangibility - small, measurable asks work (“Support sustainability” → “€25 enables one student workshop”)
* Social proof - “200 students already participated”
* Urgency - deadlines improve conversion

#### Step 8 - Put It on a Calendar

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="135.33331298828125"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Quarter</strong></td><td><strong>Focus</strong></td></tr><tr><td>Q1</td><td>Planning - budget, targets, partner list</td></tr><tr><td>Q2</td><td>Sponsor outreach - meetings, deck sharing, alumni outreach</td></tr><tr><td>Q3</td><td>Campaigns - crowdfunding, signature events, merchandise</td></tr><tr><td>Q4</td><td>Retention - annual impact report, thank-you outreach, sponsor renewal</td></tr></tbody></table>

#### Step 9 - Track What's Working

| **Metric**              | **Why It Matters**          |
| ----------------------- | --------------------------- |
| Total funds raised | Overall success |
| Number of donors | Community reach |
| Repeat sponsors | Sustainability of the model |
| Average donation | Quality of support |
| Funding diversification | Risk reduction              |
| Sponsor conversion rate | Outreach effectiveness |

> Healthy chapter: multiple funding streams, repeat sponsors, strong university support, alumni engagement

> Unhealthy chapter: last-minute fundraising, one-sponsor dependence, no donor retention

### 🧰 Ready-to-Use Toolkit

Keep these living documents on hand (templates for these are being built separately as part of the Toolbox's documentation workstream - link out to them once available):

* A. Fundraising Tracker - Partner / Owner / Stage / Last Follow-Up / Amount
* B. Sponsor Deck - About oikos · Chapter impact · Events & initiatives · Student reach · Partnership opportunities · Sponsorship tiers
* C. Annual Budget Template - Revenue (university, sponsorship, alumni, events) vs. Expenses (events, operations, marketing, community)
* D. Thank-You SOP - within 72 hours: thank-you mail, social acknowledgment, impact communication

### Summary

Fundraising isn't about asking harder - it's about building an ecosystem: diversify across the funding pyramid so no single source can sink you, tell a Mission–Need–Impact story instead of a generic ask, treat sponsorship as a relationship lifecycle rather than a transaction, and never skip the thank-you.

### 🎯 Main Takeaway

> Success is not “how much money did we raise?” - it's “how sustainable is our ecosystem of support?”

Strong fundraising = trust + relationships + credibility + measurable impact.

### 💡 Tips & Tricks - Try This Tomorrow

* Audit your current funding sources tonight. If any single source is above 40% of your budget, that's your #1 risk - start identifying a second source this week.
* Rewrite one sponsorship email using the Mission–Need–Impact formula and compare it to your old template. Notice the difference in tone.
* Send one overdue thank-you message to a past sponsor or donor right now - it costs five minutes and directly improves your renewal odds.
* Start a simple spreadsheet with four columns: Partner / Stage / Last Contact / Next Step. This alone solves most of the “poor follow-up” problem.
* Pick one Tier C (exploratory) sponsor and send a no-pressure “getting to know you” message this week - relationship before proposal, always.
* Block 30 minutes this quarter to fill in the Readiness Checklist above, even if you think you're “too early” to fundraise - most chapters aren't, they're just under-prepared.
