Congratulations, you have arrived at the last tent! By now we trust that you are properly equipped to soon leave the Basecamp for your next big adventure! This tent offers you some inspiration and reflection. Where to go first? Who to go with? What to put in your backpack after our training?
In this chapter, we will dive into a new perspective on your role as a host and get some inspiration from projects that have created movements & incremental change as you take your first step out of Basecamp. And lastly: the way before you can be hard and the pain can be real. You're not alone in this & there's help out there. Let’s be courageous and take inspired action together - one step after another towards sustainability.
After working through this tent, you will have..
a new understanding of hosting
an idea about where to find help on the journey
the courage to venture out & inspiration from the field
reflected on the tools you learned about & how to use them
potentially completed a test on your sustainability literacy & applied for a certificate
When talking about hosting, we at oikos like to quote the 4-fold practice from the Art of Hosting. The 4 elements of hosting self (taking care of yourself), hosting others (actively facilitating & designing processes), being hosted (participating) & being part of a community of practice (sharing resources, being in exchange) refer to the importance of a wider understanding of facilitation. Using the model can help you to grow awareness of the different elements & work towards striking a balance. Very often, 'hosting yourself' is one of the most difficult parts- and so important when working with people.
This is particularly important when working for change. The paths you'll be chasing can be hard and the pain can be real. First of all: It's ok! You're ok! You feeling compassion for the state of the world means that you're alive, and awake to the challenges. You're not alone! Ecological grief can be suffered by the most hardened scientists. Climate anxiety is only one term to talk about potential things you might be facing. Learn about what it is and how to grow some resilience here. You can find help in our community & in your local surrounding, please don't hesitate to reach out! And never forget: 🔊Keep on going! (3 min)
What's your preferred quadrant in the 4-fold practice? Where do you see your strengths? What's a part you tend to avoid? Where would you like to grow? How can you strike a balance?
What are the tools and methods you will take forward from this course? What will you most likely use, and how? Make sure to share a reflection in Discord & discuss with your peers. Can you summarize the basecamp in a poem or an image? We’d love to receive such a gift from you :) Another way of giving back would be to make a small donation - we’d be beyond grateful! Donate here
This course is far from perfect. Please share if you have general or specific feedback on the course in the feedback - forum on Discord.

If one thing is clear: the world doesn't need heroes, it needs hosts! We can be hosts for the changes we are awaiting, hosts for each other through the hardships & struggles, hosts for the celebrations that acknowledge all our little steps forward. And, most importantly, hosts for ourselves. Read more on what it means to be More host, less hero (5 min) in this beautiful article by Meg Wheatley.
